FAQs

Why am you running for office? that too against an incumbent of 20+ years?

Short answer is that I'm tired of complaining. I'm done just venting frustrations with friends over the state of our economy, housing, or student debt and so on. Nothing changes by just talking politics, it takes action, initiative, and sometimes a whole new mindset to bring about change.

For a functioning democracy, just voting isn't enough; this is especially true when incumbent politicians go unopposed most elections. An incumbent is a routine, and to change our future, we must change our routine. Unfortunately, incumbents, especially in local or statewide elections, often go unopposed, depriving voters of options to choose from. This not only stifles growth and progress, it emboldens incumbent politicians to become complacent, not needing to go out of their comfort zone to benefit their constituents. As more and more middle class families crumble under the weight of astronomical costs in education, healthcare, and housing, incumbent career politicians are either out of touch, ineffective, or frankly part of the problem. I'm running for the office of House Representative to change that. I'm running to offer Natick residents a choice, not just a de facto standard.  I'm running to share my vision of economic dignity through affordability with every resident of Natick, Wayland, and the whole of Massachusetts. And finally, I'm running to inspire others to run against incumbents all around the country, even if that happens to be against me in a couple of years. This is what a true democracy should feel like, and we must participate to benefit from it and to protect it. Vote Jaymin Patel to be your House Representative for Natick.

How would you describe your political views?

I feel that my core values reflect that of a typically moderate democrat; progressive when it comes to social issues and a bit conservative when it comes to the economy and fiscal responsibility.

Why are you running for the state rep position in particular? Why not something local first?

While my family lives in Natick, practically everyone else that I care about lives all over Massachusetts. I want the changes that my campaign brings about to benefit everyone that I consider friends and family, all across Massachusetts and even beyond. Another major factor that led me to set my sights on the House Representative position was the fact that this position goes unopposed year after year throughout the state. This is especially true of Natick, where the incumbent has been in the same position since 1999. Since winning that election, he has gone unopposed for the democratic primary 11 out of 12 times thus far, and I was the sole democratic candidate to oppose him throughout his entire career in the 2020 election. I believe that incumbents going virtually unopposed is a detriment to democracy because it deprives voters of a choice and more importantly breeds complacency in understanding and advocating for people's needs. By running for a state-level office myself, I hope to encourage others to run in turn strengthening and promoting a vibrant democracy full of diverse groups of representatives to choose from all across the great state of Massachusetts.
